Ibn-'Umar related that the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said, "Permit women to go to the mosques at night." His son (Ibn-'Umar's) said, "By God, we will not allow them to go, lest they take it as means for deception.(1)" Ibn-'Umar said, "May God deal with you [as you deserve]! (2) I say, 'the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said', and you say, 'We will not permit them!'" Footnotes: (1) This is a reference to his (Ibn-'Umar's son) opinion that women could deceive them, by using going to the mosque at night, as a cover for other undesirable activities. This was a manifestation of his jealousy and overprotection of women. (2) i.e He reprimanded his son for defying what the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, had said.
